We currently have vinyl flooring in one of our bathrooms and would like to replace it with tile. When is the last year vinyl flooring was made with aesbestos? This home was built in 1989 and the vinyl was installed at that time. If it contains aesbestos, how do you recommend removing the vinyl? Is it "safe" for homeowners to do this kind of job themselves? Thanks for your time!
Production of vinyl tile containing asbestos was discontinued in the 70s and was replaced with a vinyl composition tile. Your home should be OK, but if you want to be sure, it is highly suggested to consult a professional and allow someone skilled in working with asbestos to complete your project. You can find a qualified contractor in our "Find a Professional section on this web site. If you still want to attempt this yourself, be sure to protect yourself from any type of dust that is caused by removing any type of flooring. Make sure you wear a good dust mask and safety glasses.
