Can a parquet floor be sanded and refinished? Is it worth the intensive labor trying not to split the grains that run in opposite directions? Also, how do you determine if the floor is thick enough to sand/refinish?
Most parquet wood floors are solid wood and can be sanded, even when there only about 3/8 of an inch thick. If you have a forced hot air heating system in your house, take a vent cover out of your floor were heat comes out, and look at the wood from a side angle to see if it is solid or veneer. Other places to check would be at doorways or by taking a piece of quarter-round trim away from the floor. If it is a veneer it can be sanded but you have to be very careful. I highly suggest using a professional to do the work. Any of our hardwood/laminate professionals listed on www.flooranswer.com are qualified to do the job.
Previous Question: A neighbor looked at a problem with our hardwood floor and said it is "cupped." What is that and what causes it?
Next Question: Depressions in my maple hardwood floor were found when I pulled my refridgerator out from the wall. The floor has a factory urethane finish. The depressions came from the wheels. Is it possible to steam these out?
