Q:

A neighbor looked at a problem with our hardwood floor and said it is "cupped." What is that and what causes it?

A:

You probably have too much moisture coming into contact with your floor. To fix cupping, you have to eliminate the problem, which is the moisture. Then, dry the hardwood floor and fill the cracks with woody putty. It will look good after you refinish it. If too much cupping occurred and there is permanent water damage, you should consult a professional.

Next Question: Can a parquet floor be sanded and refinished? Is it worth the intensive labor trying not to split the grains that run in opposite directions? Also, how do you determine if the floor is thick enough to sand/refinish?
