Our wooden floor looks great, but it recently acquired splits in the tongue and grooves. What caused this and what should we do?

Sounds like your floor did not have the right underlayment, causing the floor to move and therefore weaken at the seams, causing the split. Your best bet is to get the advice of a professional.
