Q:

How do you match a new hardwood floor to an existing hardwood floor in a doorway where hardwood ends in a straight edge with a horiztonal piece (in the doorway)? This is where a carpeted room meets the hardwood room and we are trying to replace the carpet with hardwood.

A:

Weaving the vertical pieces would be the way to go. First, take out the varied length pieces in the doorway. Take out the smallest ones, and try to leave the long ones. To take them out, the pieces would have to be cut wtlh a skill saw in the length of the pieces you are taking out. Then they would come out easily. To put the pieces back in, you will have to do some gluing and nailing on these pieces. Now you can lay the rest of your floor. This would come out really good if the sanding and refinishing of the foyer and dining room were done together. All that said, we strongly recommend having this type of work done by a professional. Qualified experts in this type of work can be found on this web site in the "Find a Professional" section.
