Ceramic / Stone - Installation & Repair

Q:

I am installing porcelain ceramic tile in kitchen. Tile is 18x18. Floor is currently vinyl top w/hardwood floor under. I removed the vinyl top and part of hardwood floor andllaid cement sheets. Am I headed in the right direction?

A:

It is always good to remove old flooring instead of covering it with more floors, to give you a more sound surface to put your new floor on. You are headed in the right direction if you followed the directions for installing the cement sheets. These sheets need to be installed on a cement thin-set material that is installed with a trowel - preferably the same type of trowel used to install the tiles. Use screwnails or nails about every 8 inches. The thin-set helps level the floor and helps hold sheets down if nails don't hold. If you already placed the cement sheets and didn't put down thin-set, then I recommend that you put a lot more nails than the 8-inch rule. You should be OK after that. Next make sure you finish joints with a mesh and bonding material. You can use thin-set for this. Make sure your floor is pretty level be for you start laying tiles. If you'd like to have a professional do the work, select from any of the INSTALL Ohio Group contractors listed on this web site and any of them will get the job done quickly and efficiently.
