Wood - Underlayment
Q:
With new house construction and the use of 3/4 tongue & groove for the initial floor, it was told to me to put 1/2 inch plywood before the 3/4 tongue and groove. Is this overkill or important? I intend to put wood floors throughout the house.
A:
In conventional joist constructions, most buildiing codes specify a sound subfloor. It adds considerable strength to the structure and serves as a base for attaching the finish flooring. With the extra strength, you will be happier when you walk on your new floors. Finally, most wood manufactures will tell you to put down plywood underlayment.
