Basement Floors

Q:

What product would you recommend for use on cement floors in a damp, potentially wet, basement? We also have a foyer to cover at outside entry door, 1/2 flight steps higher than basement. We use dehumidifiers, and there are French drain and sump pump installed.

A:

Ceramic tile is an excellent choice for basements and foyers. Ceramic tile must be installed with a multi-purpose, thin-set mortar, and then grouted with a cemetitious (cement-like) grout. The concrete and ceramic floor should then become one after installation. As with all cemetitious products, there should be no mildew. If you want your basement to have a cozy atmosphere, area rugs should help. To install your ceramic tile, it's best to let a professional handle the project.
